Force Flash to Brighten Faces on Sunny Days

by Ariane - Creative Director @Storymix Media on 04/16/2009

Want to take great photos on a sunny day?  Use your flash. Yes, even on a sunny day.

Believe me, anyone over the age of 2 will thank you for it.

The noonday sun can cause some nasty shadows in the eye socket, aging even the youngest subject.

By simply using the flash when you’re within 8 feet, you can brighten their appearance and their opinion of your photography skills.

Another reason to use a flash on a sunny day is to get rid of those “accidental” silhouette photos. They look beautiful, but may not have been your intention.

You want to capture the beautiful sky and your subject? Use the flash.

The photo below on the left shows a boy flying a kite on a glorious summer day. We can see that it’s a beautiful day, but can’t really see the joy on the boy’s face.

same boy, same day, which photo do you prefer?

Same boy, same day, which photo do you prefer?

Although the grass does get a bit washed out in the photo on the right, we are able to see both the sky and the boy’s face.
