Last week we took photos both landscape (horizontal) and portrait (vertical). Today we’ll critique (review) our photos.
When you first take a photo, the quickest way to review it is on the LCD screen on the back of the camera. This method has two problems.
- It drains the battery.
- You can’t see the teeny tiny details of your photo on that little screen.
So what we want to do now is review the photos on the computer. You can either hook up your camera directly to the computer by the cable that came with it or pop out the photo card and insert it into your card reader. Almost every printer has a card reader, so that’s what I use.
Make sure you download the photos using your photo software and organize them immediately into folders within the software. You can use either the software that came with the computer or with the camera.
When you’re done downloading your photos, and you’re sure they are on the computer, you need to make room on the card for new photos and video. You can go to the settings menu in the camera and reformat the card to delete all the photos on the card.
Let’s take a look at those photos:
If you see your fingers (or a pink splotch in the corner) in any of the photos, that means your fingers were covering part of the lens.
If you see a shadow or pink tint to the photos that means your fingers were covering the flash.
If the whole picture is blurry, that means you probably shook the camera when you pressed the shutter button.
One other thing – did you cut off anyone’s head in the photos? My mom was really good at making everyone headless. Try to always look at the LCD screen on your camera before taking the shot to ensure everyone’s head is in the photo.
have a blast taking video of your friends
For this week’s assignment, we’re going to get to know the video function on the camera. Take 4 videos of about a minute each:
- Someone inside at night with the lights on. Let’s get familiar with how much light you need to get good video. Remember, that flash on your camera only works with photos.
- Someone inside during the day.
- Someone outside but kind of far away. Let’s see how close you have to be to hear people clearly.
- Someone outside and close (within maybe 5 feet). This should be your best video. We should be able to both hear and see them clearly.
Next week we’ll review the video on your computer to see which one you like best.
