Welcome back from Christmas break. I gained two pounds. How did you do? In honor of today’s holiday, we’ll take a brief look at New Year’s Resolutions and where this blog is headed.

January will be spent creatively examining our New Year’s Resolutions. The first week we will look at making something of our Advent photos and video; instead of putting them on the to-do list.

The rest of the month I will be updating the blog on Tuesdays and Thursdays with other tie-ins to resolutions. Just like the Advent Challenge, I’d love input from you. To help get your resolutions going, I have a book I’d like to highly recommend.

Score for Life, by Jim Fannin, really helped me organize my work and personal life, enabling me to achieve more of my goals. One aspect of his system is to set annual goals (think resolutions), then break them down into monthly and weekly goals.

For the blog, what this means is that we’ll document our resolutions at the beginning of the year. Then, once a month I’ll post a resolution reminder along with an update from a reader, so long as I find some willing participants.

For instance, last year I set as one of my annual goals to complete a family year-in-review movie. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the 2008 movie done until Labor Day 2009. So, this year although it will be my annual goal, I’m including it in my monthly goal for January. My weekly goal for the first week of January will be to gather all the photos and video for the project. The following week, my goal will be to run the photos through Photoshop and pick scenes from the video clips, etc.

Is one of your goals to drop a few pounds? Then take a photo of yourself on New Year’s Day, and one per month as incentive until you get to your target. Trying to learn a new language? Get some video of yourself practicing at the start of the year, and then critique yourself throughout the year. Use your photos and video to document your progress. If you have any photos or video clips of your resolution, please send a link to blog@my-photo-video.com.

Let’s make it a resolution to put our media to better use this year. Instead of happening to take a photo or video clip, let’s purposely document the story of our lives using our media.
